Monday Poem: “Masks” by Harper Steele

Summer Camp 2020

This poem was written during our 2020 Summer Camp.
(Listen to Harper read this poem)

I used to give people
A friendly shy smile.
To tell people,
Hey! You can trust me
Every once in a while.
But now I am hidden
Behind my mask.
Comfort is one of
The things that I lack.
No friendly shy smiles,
No sticking out my tongue,
For my face is covered
Till COVID is done.
We wash our hands
Until they are clean
We stay in our houses
Hoping for a vaccine.
We watch protests and violence
All on our screen
We hide our faces
Never to be seen.
