Writers’ Room, Saturday, March 6
10 AM – 12 PM
Robert Lee // The Obituary, Writing Your Own
This class is life-affirming. It is a chance to reflect on the adventures of our lives and think about the stories we want to be remembered by. By penning your own obituary, you dwell not on death but on a life well-lived.
Emily Freeman // Food Writing
Learn how to bring the tastes, smells, and colors of the kitchen (or garden) to the page. We’ll read, discuss, and write all about food. Warning: you may emerge feeling hungry!
Becca Carson // You’re a Sky Full of Stars: On Metaphor
Use the power of metaphor to draft poems that move out of the cliche and into the grit of the specific. We’ll interrogate the machinery of poems that work well and apply it to writing our own poems.
2 PM – 4 PM
Melissa Stephenson // The Art of Brevity: Flash Nonfiction
Explore the thrills and challenges of writing complete pieces in 750 words or less. We’ll analyze examples and discuss how to leap from the tiny to the enormous in your writing.
Caroline Patterson // Make a Scene: Fiction
Starting with a moment of impact, we’ll use senses, dialogue,
and character to create the first scene of that story that has been lingering in your imagination.
